How Insulation & Ventilation Work Together
Why should both insulation and ventilation be priorities for your home?
If your home has an accessible underfloor space, insulation can be installed at a relatively low cost. If you can access under your house, see what you have got or get in touch and we can check for you. If your underfloor is more than half a metre off the ground, great news, you can insulate!
An uninsulated underfloor loses up to 15% of your home’s heat and underfloor insulation does make a difference. It is not a replacement for a heater; however, it helps as little heat as possible escape through the floor by creating a barrier that protects your home from the air that flows beneath your property. Underfloor insulation will also help stop drafts of cold air from entering your home through the floor. It will also help control interior temperatures in Summer as hot air rises and underfloor insulation can help to keep for your floors cool.
Properly installed underfloor insulation, combined with a heat source is a cost-effective way to create a warmer, more comfortable home with smaller energy bills.
It is recommended to use specific underfloor insulation rather than left over wall or ceiling insulation. There are a couple of options when it comes to insulation for underfloor, you can use polyester, glasswool or other materials with insulating benefits. We choose to use Mammoth™ polyester insulation as it is a very effective form of insulation, is safe to touch, non-allergenic, non-toxic and made from recycled plastic. It has a 50-year warranty, doesn’t itch and is injected with a flame retardant. Mammoth’s™ underfloor insulation options include underfloor insulation sections or an insulation blanket. The blanket is moisture resistant is designed to be stapled into place between floor joists by an experienced installer or builder.
If you currently have no underfloor insulation, even installing insulation with the minimum R-value will make a big difference to the heat lost through your floors. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation is at preventing heat loss. Both Mammoth™ insulation sections and blanket have an R-value higher than the recommended R1.4.
Properly installed insulation will also give you the maximum benefit, you want to ensure there are no gaps and that insulation is not compressed beyond its optimal thickness.
